Question

For early and middle stages of dementia, what are some steps/helpful guidelines when having patients perform bed mobility and transfers?

Answer

Early Stages

For early stages:

  1. Provide verbal steps in 3-steps maximum to increase ability to understand task.
  2. Order task sequence in a consistent manner across caregivers (CNAs and Nursing Staff)
  3. Verbally review newly learned steps for transfers when added to resident care plan often as reduced short term memory for newly learned tasks will be present

For middle stages:

  1. Reducing noise level in environment during tasks will increase success
  2. Break down steps for tasks into 2 steps max.
  3. Provide written cues of steps (taking into account visual acuity)
  4. Residents may not be able to independently complete task, however they can repeat therefore providing verbal and visual cues along with demonstrating tasks with increase success

While Osteoporosis has been categorized as a predominantly older woman’s condition, the fact that it is the cause of 2 million fractures a year, makes it a serious health concern. Typically, the concept of weight-bearing exercise does not lend itself to aquatic interventions, but the current literature is compelling for the use of water as a beneficial alternative for the osteoporosis individual. This course is directly related to the practice of physical therapy and is therefore appropriate for the PT/PTA.
