Accessibility consultation is a growing specialty for medical and design/build professionals. This training program provides a common language and understanding of the specialized knowledge and skills needed to implement a team approach to service delivery. Crucial knowledge includes UD design principles, legislative compliance, design/build problems/solutions, and specialized products to promote safety, independence and quality of life for both caregivers and consumers. Using case studies and a multi-media format, practical applications and problem solving strategies using a team bulding approach will be presented to help eliminate environmental barriers using universal design principles.

- After this course, participants will be able to identify accessible design guidelines and building codes and their impact on public policies and the private sector.
- After this course, participants will be able to describe the types of assistive technology, adaptive equipment, and specialized/common architectural products used to maximize independence, accessibility, and safety.
- After this course, participants will be able to recognize how to conduct a comprehensive environmental and functional assessment to determine the impact of environmental barriers on a person's ability to perform daily activities and recognize potential solutions from low tech to high tech to provide options.
- After this course, participants will be able to identify the basic principles of universal design of residential, long-term care, and public settings.
- After this course, participants will be able to describe the effects of functional decline and limitations due to aging and disability on safety, independence, and use of the environment.

Mrs. Shamberg has 25 years experience in program management and providing consultation services to educational institutions, businesses, community-service organizations, government agencies, senior centers, and as an expert witness in litigation cases. Mrs. Shamberg is president of Abilities OT Services, Inc. a consulting firm specializing in accessibility issues. She is the AOTA representative to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) 117.2 Accessible Design Committee.
Mrs. Shamberg has worked as a clinical therapist working in schools, rehabilitation centers, work hardening programs, and homecare agencies. In addition to hundreds of international presentations on accessibility, Mrs. Shamberg presently teaches the only internet-based mentoring program on accessibility for medical and design/build professionals.
